It is very sudden and strong, lasts for a short amount of time, and fizzes out in the end because they both kill themselves. Love is the driving force behind the events in Romeo and Juliet, particularly the romantic forbidden love between the two main characters. Although Romeo and Juliet are from opposing houses, they immediately fall in love with each other when seeing each other at a party, refuse to let anything come between them, and ultimately, give up their lives for love. First of all, the love that Romeo and Juliet has for one another is a very sudden love.
Juliet is certain that she loves Romeo, but is wise by acting a bit cautious because their love seems “too rash, too unadvised, too sudden” (77). While Juliet IS clearly a very passionate girl, she is smart and realizes that head-over-heels passion can be very dangerous. Romeo, on the Chin 2 other hand, thinks he knows what he is doing because he is not one bit cautious at all. Within the first couple of minutes of meeting Juliet, he has already completely forgotten about Rosalie and starts talking about Juliet: “Oh, she doth teach the torches to burn bright!
It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night, Like a rich jewel in an Ethiopia?s ear, Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear” (53). Romeo seems to forget all about his love for Rosalie the second he meets Juliet which spouts the question if he was never really in love with Rosalie to begin with. Shakespeare reveals these two very different perspectives of love to show that love can happen in many ways and it’s not necessarily the timing in which people fall in love but the way they fall in love.
Secondly, Romeo and Juliet refuse to let anything or anybody come between hem and the love they have for one another. When Romeo receives the bitter news that he has been exiled from Verona and can no longer see Juliet, he finds a way to sneak into Gullet’s house at night so they can talk about their relationship and how they are going to cope with the loss of not being able to see each other. He does not care who will see him: “Come death and welcome. Juliet wills it so. How isn’t my soul? Let’s talk. It is not day” (157).
Romeo says that although he is going to get caught by the Prince if he stays any longer, he does not care if he has Juliet by his side. If Juliet wants him to be by her side, then shall be it. When Capsule forces Juliet to marry Paris, Juliet says to Friar Lawrence that she would rather “long to die if what thou speakers speak not of remedy” (181 Juliet despises Paris so much that she would rather kill herself than to have to marry him. Her love for Romeo is so strong that she refuses to even let the smallest thing come between their love.
Chin 3 Thirdly, Romeo and Juliet both give up their lives for love. The Friar is supposed to send a message to Romeo telling him that Juliet is alive and to mom get Juliet and take her away; however, Romeo fails in receiving the message and believes she is truly dead so he goes all the way back to Verona and drinks a poison so he can die with her: “Come, bitter conduct, come, uncovers guide. Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on the dashing rocks thy seasick, weary bark. Here’s to my love! O true apothecary, thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss die. (227) He drinks the poison, dying moments before Juliet wakes up. Juliet, seeing that Romeo is dead, is angry that Romeo does not save her any poison, so she says “… I’ll be brief. O happy dagger, this is thy sheath. There rust and let me die. ” (231) They are so in love that they cannot even live without each other, and they resort to committing suicide because they know that dying would be better than to have Juliet marry Paris and so forth. As a final point, this tale of Romeo and Juliet expresses how the emotion of love is a very empowering emotion and can control how people think and act.
The emotion love is stronger than any other emotion they have and their love for one another and leads them to make very irrational and very foolish sections.
