Russo Japanese war Essays

Russo japanese war

The Russo-Japanese war was a war between Russia and Japan. The war started with Japan’s naval attack on Port Arthur in 1904 (Rao, 276). It was a battle for the control of Korea and parts of Manchuria between the Japanese and the Russian empire that took place from 1904 to 1905.It is the first modern war in which an Asian country defeated a European power. The victory gave Japan prominence in World politics as its voice was now heard in global matters.

The war was caused by the Japanese protest and struggle against the Russian interests in China, Manchuria, Korea, and also the Liaodong Peninsula which was controlled by the city of Port Arthur (Rao, 281).

Japan was successful in the war due to the surprise attack they launched on the Russian eastern fleet at Port Arthur as they showed more aggressiveness than the Russians in the war. Japan was equally successful in the war due to the division in the Russian navy. The Russian navy was divided into three naval sea bases, a situation that incapacitated them and made them fight below their full strength.  Russia also lacked the necessary transport facilities to strengthen its military forces in Manchuria with the required soldiers and equipments. Japan on the other hand had an already expanded army after its war with China in 1894 and it was not surprising that when the war with Russia broke out in 1904, they had an upper hand. Japan’s huge success in the war also lies in the fact that they had more ground troops in the Far East than Russia as the war was fought in the Far East. The discipline within the Japanese army also ensured their victory over their Russian counterparts as the Russian soldiers lacked discipline, were inefficient, and had strategies that were anachronistic to the modern ethics of battle.

Japan, unlike other Asian nations quickly realized that the strength and superiority of the Western world lies in their industrialization (Rao, 275-276). A situation which made them take steps to achieving industrialization. The Japanese government sent brilliant and promising students to the Western world to learn the rudiments of science and technology. Foreign industrialists, Scientists and technologists were also invited to Japan to establish industries, invest in the new born economy, set up laboratories in the country.

In the area of the military forces, Japan reorganized her infantry forces based on the Prussian model, her navy was fashioned after the British model (Rao, 276). Huge amount of money was directed into the Military system in achieving modernization.

It was due to these things that Japan was able to out succeed other Asian countries in industrialization and militarization.
