To communicate effectively a person may need to understand cultural diversity, have advanced language skills, and behave with patience. Interpersonal communication is essential in every area of life, but it especially critical in the field of nursing. Nurses are responsible for understanding and for being understood.

They are required to both listen carefully and report information accurately and efficiently. Effective communication skills in nursing create a high level of customer satisfaction and excellence while preventing medical mishaps (Oman, n. d. ). Nursing for the Future Competency (NOF) in communication will interact effectively with patients, families, and colleagues, fostering mutual respect and shared decision making to enhance patient satisfaction and health outcomes (Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Nurse of the Future Competency Committee, 2010).

Essential VI: Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Outcomes Effective communication and collaboration among health professionals is imperative to providing patient-center care. All health professions are challenged to educate future clinicians to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interprofessional team, emphasizing communication, evidence-base practice, quality improvement approaches, and informatics. Fundamentals to effective interprofessional and intra-professional collaboration is a definition of shared goals, clear role xpectations of members; a flexible decision-making process; and the establishment of open communication patterns and leadership (American Association of Colleges of Nursing The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice, 2008). Patient care Year after year, clinicians, nurses and health care researchers say poor or ineffective communication is a major risk factor to patient safety. According to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization, communication was the leading root cause of sentinel events in all categories in 2005 (Scalise, n. d. ).

Effective communication depends on clarity; the speaker must convey his or her message in such a way that the listener clearly understands that message, also communication is influenced by a host of factors: gender, ethnicity, culture, and professional dynamics. So a speaker’s intended message may not be what the listener hears or understands which can compromise patient safety. Student nurses need to understand the importance of communication in patient care. Because it’s very important in patient quality of care and patient safety, Effective communication is part of Nurse of the Future competencies.

Nurses are taught how to communicate with patients in the right manner. Communication skills must be mastered like any other skills. When a patients discusses a problem, nurses must deal with it through the use of therapeutic communication. Nurses don’t give false assurances; we listen and give our best response depending on the clients’ problem. Effective communication and teamwork is essential for the delivery of high quality, safe patient care. Communication failure is an extremely common cause of inadvertent patient harm.

The complexity of medical care, coupled with the inherent limitations of human performance, make it critically important that clinicians have standarised communication tools, create an environment in which individuals can speak up and express concerns, and share common critical language to alert team members to unsafe situations (Leonard, Graham, & Bonacum, n. d. ). According to the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for professional Nursing Practice, teamwork among healthcare professionals is associated with delivering high quality and safe patient care.

The Graduate nurse The nurse patient relationship set the tone of the care experience and has powerful impact on patient satisfaction. Without a positive nurse patient relationship, there cannot be patient and family satisfaction. And there cannot be an environment that supports anxiety reduction and healing (“The nurse patient relationship,” n. d. ). Working in the community this writer believe that patients and families count on nurses to keep them informed, to connect them to their physicians and other caregivers, to listen to them and to ease their anxiety.

Communicating is highly critical in nursing care and is part of the Nurse of the Future Competencies.
