Social problem Essay

The Humane Society of the United States (HUGS) stated that the fur industry “mistreats and ills more than 50 million animals a year” - Social problem Essay introduction. The most shocking fact is that not only is this tragedy happening to wild animals; it is also happening to our own domestic animals such as cats and dogs. Many countries such as Denmark and Russia are large fur traders, but China is the top country of the illegal fur trade. Undercover investigators from Swiss Animal Protection International visited fur farms in China’s, and quickly learned why outsiders are banned from visiting. There are no penalties for abusing animals on fur farms in China-?farmers can house and slaughter animals however they see fit. The investigators found horrors beyond their worst imaginings. Not only are the farmers abusing these animals, they are also making it impossible for people to understand where this fur may be coming from. “Even if a fur garment’s label says it was made in a European country, the animals were likely raised and slaughtered elsewhere-?possibly on an unregulated Chinese fur farm. ” We could very well be encouraging the growing demand of fur trade in the U.

S and not even know it. The United States has already banned the sales of cat and dog fur, but an HUGS investigation proved otherwise. “Dog fur is still slipping into the country on unlabeled and falsely advertised jackets. ” The Global Action Network (GANG), is a nonprofit organization stating that ‘ ‘Two million dogs and cats are killed in Asia every year to supply the fur trade” Even though the killing of the animals, and skinning is done in such places as China; the fur is still exported to areas in the U. S.

HAJJIS attempts to spread the idea that “Buying fur or fur trim supports an industry that kills millions of domestic dogs and cats each year-?both on purpose and accidentally in traps”. Is it possible that society has come to the point of killing our own pets, just in order to go with the suasion trend? Who’s at fault for this? It’s easy to point the finger blaming the producers and fur trading companies, but in reality who is to blame for this problem? Why are producers and companies so eager to make these fur coats, and fur blankets?

It’s due to the vast interest of consumers. Illegal fur trade companies would not bother making and producing fur unless it was actually worth it. These companies are torturing these animals because of U. S. People all around the U. S are interested in buying fur without even knowing the tragedy behind issue. But in reality, consumers in the U. S don’t care. Whatever the fashion or trend may be at the time, celebrities copy it just to seem cool. Is this garment of fur really needed in order to survive? No, it not a need, it’s simply just a want.

The Human Development Report 1998 Overview of the United Nations Development Program (UNDO) illustrated how every modern day issue is due to us as humans. ‘The real issue is not consumption itself but its patterns and effects. ” There will always be consumption. No matter what, we can’t stop prod icing and making new things, but the real problem is the pattern and effects of the consumptions. The pattern is the more we buy fur, the worse hurt these domestic animals. One celebrity who is a high contributor of fur is Paris Hilton. She has been seen wearing various amounts of fur coats, and apparel.

But is this real for or faux? Animal rights groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PET A) have strike down against many celebrities wearing fur. PETA Vice President Dan Mathews claims that, ‘there is nothing remotely ‘sweet’ about torture deaths of animals killed for fur” It’s not for sure if these celebrities even know the issues going on with illegal fur trade companies, but here ignorance is not plausible. We cannot encourage the vast growth of illegal fur. Another Celebrity that PETA has gone against is Jenifer Lopez. Her Sweetmeat clothing line sells real animal fur.

PETA Vice President say, “Jenifer Lopez may be able to get the images of bloody, skinned foxes still alive and breathing out of her head, but we doubt her fans will. ” recently searched around on Google for stores that may produce real fur. Was able to find that Bass Pro Shopping Goods actually sells real animal fur. I contacted the company in order to find out some more information. A Customer Service preventative at Bass Pro Shops replied to me by saying ‘ ‘The only apparel we have that is real animal fur is an assortment of hats that use rabbit fur. ” This clearly proves that the selling of fur is still going on.

The selling of our own domestic pets such as rabbit fur continues to be sold. Consumerism is one of our nation’s worst social problems. One of the last pieces of legislation passed by President Clinton was to ban the import of dog and cat fur into the U. S. Although this legislation was passed, illegal fur is still imported, exported, and sold throughout our country. It’s come to the point where companies were willing to put any label in a garment that the customer wanted. The National Council of Spas (NAACP) says “Deceptive practices are the reason that people buy items made from cat or dog fur.

Mislabel or lacks of labels are the most common reasons. This is why the NAACP urges everyone not to buy fur. ” It’s come to the point where we as a society don’t even know what we are consuming or where it’s really coming from. Why are we so desperate? Knap Shah editor of Consumption and Consumerism wrote, “Fifth trends continue without change -? not shifting room polluting to cleaner goods and production technologies, not shifting priority from consumption for conspicuous display to meeting basic needs today’s problems of consumption and human development will worsen” Americans tend to always want what they don’t already have.

No matter what it may be, Americans want something new and different. Not shifting from polluting to cleaner goods clearly proves that Americans are whiling to go forward continuing the need for illegal fur. Society has adapted to believe that in order to be seen as ‘trend)/’ or “cool” that they need to buy high end products. Professor Juju lied Scorch wrote the book The Overspent American which claims that “Americans want to spend more than what they have. ” Has it come to the point where society will buy anything in order to look “cool” Even if it means killing a domestic animal for its fur?

Fur has been a trend for many years now, ever since the sass. Fur has recently become more popular in the 2011 trend. I have personally seen girls wearing fur boots during the summer proving that nowadays fur isn’t used for warmth; its used simply to look fashionable. Could it be possible that your own fur boots were made from the fur of a cat or dog? Here is a video that illustrates the horrific scene of a “Shocking Fur Trade Farm” http://features. PETA. Org/Countermeasures/ Real fur is more expensive than faux fur so it also makes it seem as if you have more money. Society looks up to celebrities as an inspiration Of modern day trends.

Professor Juliet Scorch also wrote that, “Everything we do, we want to outdo everyone else. We want to see who has the next best thing and “beat them” as if it was a competition. ” Society is whiling to consume anything in order to look cool or be cool. Knap Shah Editor of Consumption and Consumerism wrote that “Runaway growth in consumption in the past 50 ears is putting strains on the environment never before seen. ” That strain on environment is killing our own domestic animals. Due to the vast growth of consumption in America, we are encouraging this foul behavior.

Society always wants to consume the next best thing no matter what it may be. Does this mean that people in our society have so much greed that it is ruining us as humans and making us unsatisfied with what we have? “The question is not, can they reason? , nor can they talk? , but can they suffer? ” -? English philosopher, Jeremy Beneath As of now illegal fur trade has been going on for long enough and needs to end now. What can we conclude will happen in the future to these animals based off of what has been done so far? First and foremost these animals will become endangered or extinct.

The morality rate of our own domestic animals such as dogs, cats, and rabbits will increase. Do we really want such things to happen to our beloved animals? There are various ways assist in animal friendly organizations. You can lend a helping hand by making small donations to the Humane Society, PETA or many other animal friendly organizations. There are many other ways to help. Protests can be held against companies in order to stop buying fur period, whether real or faux. As concluded, you can never really know whether a certain type of fur is real or faux due to false labeling.
