Statistics show that around 70% of car accidents can be prevented due to distracted or irresponsible driving, which occurs when drivers fail to pay enough attention to the road. It is important to recognize that there are several factors that may divert a driver’s focus, including reaching for food or drink, changing the radio station, talking to passengers, texting, or using a map or GPS. As drivers, we have a responsibility to prioritize the safety of our passengers and everyone else on the road by staying alert and careful.

One of my articles highlighted a tragic incident involving a 19-year-old who was driving three 15-year-olds in his car. Regrettably, because he was intoxicated, he caused an accident that led to the death of one of his passengers. This accident could have been easily avoided if the driver had acted responsibly by abstaining from driving while under the influence or consuming alcohol. Similarly, on April 12th, 2011, another unfortunate event took place when a motorcyclist, aged 23, crashed at a speed surpassing 100 mph resulting in his untimely demise.

By selecting a more secure speed, the accident could have been avoided and potentially spared the motorcyclist’s life. Another occurrence entailed the unfortunate death of a 70-year-old man who was involved in a collision while standing in the street to observe a shuttle launch. It is crucial to acknowledge that despite the man’s presence in the street being inappropriate, drivers were already preoccupied with the shuttle launch.

Drivers should display empathy towards the elderly and be ready for unexpected situations. In Davenport, a 9-year-old boy was hit by Lindsey Fox, who is 19 years old, while crossing at a crosswalk. Despite having the right of way with a green light, Fox could have prevented the accident by being more attentive and checking for pedestrians on the crosswalk before proceeding.
