Sustainability. “Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs” Step 2 My Ecological Footprint. My ecological footprint is 3. 73 per capita of which, i will need 3. 73 planets if everyone lived my lifestyle. According to Borderland’s definition of sustainable development I am not really meeting the present needs of the people and its improvising the ability of the future generation to meet their own need.

I need to start to start growing my own food produced by using compost instance of using fertilizers which contain chemical which might be harmful to the soil. I will start buying more organic food, using less energy to reduce my ecological footprint. It will make me feel good to know that I am doing my bit to help to find a solution the problem. Utilitarianism. Utilitarianism holds that any action is judged as good if the act maximizes the total amount of good. Wiping out half the present population to benefit the future generation or letting children to die of preventable diseases won’t make any good.

If we do not change our attitude towards nature or preserving our environment our future generation we have to live with consequences of the present generation, unless we undergo drastic social transformation. Fair is fair- Distributive Justice. Since we are aware that we are living on savings, it will be fair for the present generation to change its lifestyle by consuming less on our savings, so that he future generation can have the chance to live on this planet.

The future generation also have as much right to live on this planet as our present generation. Lets’ do our bit to save the planet earth until we find a permanent solution. Grannies- Environmental Ethics. The planet earth and its nature has an intrinsic value just because it has a God given right. It was here many years ago before the human evolution. At the same time it has an instrumental value to us human because it provide us with air to breathe, food to eat, water to drink to help us survive as human beings.
