Leadership theories have been created during the last several decades in order for people to gain a further understanding about the leadership phenomena. Theories are used to not only explain the different leadership styles, but also on the effectiveness it has on their followers and the company as a whole. One leadership style I find to not only be an effective theory but probably the most successful one is transformational leadership. According to Daft (2011) Leadership is, “An influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purpose” (p.
). In the same book, Daft (2011) defines Transformational Leadership as, “leadership characterized by the ability to bring about significant change in followers and the organization” (p. 362). From both definitions, it can be understood that leadership and transformational leadership are closely related. In the following paragraphs, there will be further analyses of transformational leadership and its accuracy and relation to leadership.
Leadership styles progress as individuals observe the leaders in their own lives, such as relatives, teachers, role models and bosses.
As people evolve into their own leadership style they approach their teams in various ways. There are some leaders who give incentives to their team members in order to motivate them and there are others who focus on being hard on their team members by punishing them for errors. Transformational leaders motivate team members by sharing their energy and passion with the team. Transformational leaders are the most effective leaders for many reasons. Transformational leadership was developed originally for political leaders by James McGregor Burns in the late 1970’s, it was then fervently implemented in business leadership world.
There are four components to transformational leadership which are charisma or idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualized consideration. A transformational leader is a person that has the ability to inspire; it is someone who desires change, who has a vision for the greater good of the followers and company as a whole. Transformational leaders are also people who have the ability to mobilize followers to achieve results by always taking that extra step, and by caring and ensuring that their follower’s needs are met and cared for.
This leader is a role model for it3s followers by inspiring them and making them interested in a project. These leaders begin with the development of a vision and a view of the future that will motivate and convert potential followers. They are leaders that understand their followers by knowing each of their strengths and weaknesses that allow the leader to plan accordingly giving them tasks that the followers can endeavor in. These leaders are constantly selling a vision and they take every opportunity to try and convince others to join them in the project.
They are very committed individuals who are full of energy and gain trust easily from others. According to Daft (2011) “Rather than analyzing and controlling specific transactions with followers using rules, directions and incentives…. Transformational leadership focuses on vision, shared values, ideas…and to provide common ground” (p. 363. ) Not only from the extensive research I have done but also by my own work experience, I believe that Transformational theory is the most effective leadership theory.
Being in the work field for over 10 years, I have come across many leaders with a variety of leadership styles. I have followed several types of leaders during this time, many in which I did not understand. For the most part, leaders tend to not listen to their followers nor give them the time and attention they need. The only leader that ever made me feel like if I was a vital part of the team was a leader who had a transformational style. Working for her was a wonderful and uplifting experience; she put energy and passion into everything.
She cared about you and wanted you to succeed. With her good morale, understanding ways, and dedication to us, we had the best motivation and strived as a group to be the best that we could be. From my personal experience, I can say that this leadership style is definitely effective and followers of transformational leaders exhibit high levels of job satisfaction and commitment. From all the leadership theories, the one that closely relates to what a real leader should be is transformational theory. This theory describes a leader who is influential, charismatic, and giving.
Transformational leaders do not control their followers but allow them to be their own people, share a vision with them and allow them to be productive. These types of leaders pay attention to their followers and motivate followers to let them grow into leaders themselves. It is so important that leaders and followers share a common goal and work together to reach that goal. Transformational leadership does just that along with everything else a real leader should do. Transformational leadership is such an effective leadership theory and there are many people and studies that agree with it. In well over 100 empirical studies, transformational leadership has been found to be consistently related to organizational and leadership effectiveness…These results hold in a wide range of samples and contexts from Fortune 100 business organizations, to military units, to presidential administrations. ” (Bryman, 1992; Lowe, Kroeck, & Sivasubramaniam, 1996). Although there are several different leadership styles not all of them are considered to be effective. Transformational leadership is not only an effective style but probably the most effective one.
Transformation leadership is style that has been proven to work not only in the United States but across the world. Having the ability to inspire others to share the same vision with you, taking the extra step by being there for your team and being able to motivate others are all the qualities a leader should have and transformational style has them. Not only by the paper I have written and by the research I have conducted but also from my own experience Transformational leadership is a style that leaders across our nation should possess.
