Deviance it self involves breaking a norm set by our society and evoking a negative reaction from others. Reaction from others not committing deviancy can differ depending on how severe the act is (class September 29th, slide 1). The movie the The Equalizer has many forms of deviancy that results in many different reactions. I am going to talk about the forms of deviancy in this film. The Equalizer is about a man, Robert McCall, which leads a normal life. He has a secret past that seems to have been important.

His wife died, which leads the audience to believe that this is why he decided to lead a normal life. He works at a Home Mart which is similar too Home Depot and is a good worker and well liked by his coworkers. During the night he usually goes to a diner to read books, which is where he meets a young girl, Alien, who works for a Russian escort service.

Robert, who becomes fond of her acknowledge that she is not happy with her life and he feels something is off about the whole situation. The viewers can tell that Robert sees this as deviant because he feels bad for her and encourages her to change her life.

What he does not know is that, it is not up to her, she is not free to do with her life what she pleases. As the two are sitting together, Alien receives a call from what the audience believes is her pimp, Slavs, and a limousine pulls up revealing an obese older man waiting for her. She obviously does not want to go, but Slavs gives her no choice. Robert observes this situation go on and the next day he sees a bruise on her face. Once again the spectators feel really bad because we know that who ever did that to Alien was committing a form of deviancy and our reaction was a feeling of melancholy.

Robert asks her what happened which is proof that he knows that it is not right for her to have a bruise. The two take a walk around town, and Alien receives a call from Slavs to which she does not answer. Then Robert and Alien are surprised by the arrival of Slavs as he pulls up next to them. Slavs slaps Alien and confronts her about not answering her phone. Robert takes a step forward but as he notices Slave’s gun he steps back. As the viewers, we can see that was not celebrated at all by Robert, he in fact wishes he could do something about the situation.

The following day, Robert goes to the diner and does not see Alien there. The waiter tells Robert that she is in the ICC. Robert goes to visit her and sees how bad of a condition she is in. He then goes to the place where Slavs and his men do business and asks them that if he gives them nine thousand and eight hundred dollars they would give Alien her freedom. The men laugh at him and finally Slavs tells him that he can only have her for a month. As Robert is about to leave he decides to come back and heroically kills everybody in the room.

This as we all know is a form of deviancy because he killed all f the men, but somehow, the audience celebrates this form of deviancy because he is doing it for a good cause. The Russian mafia is portrayed as the “bad guys” and Robert is seen as the “good guy. ” This type of deviancy manifested by the “good guy,” is seemed as okay Just because the “good guy’ executes it. If the roles were reversed there would most likely be a negative reaction to this type of deviancy. In a way this bad guys to go away. We lock the “bad guys” up or give them the death penalty, which is similar to what Robert did.

Subsequent to the murders of the men, a Russian engages, Teddy arrives to Boston to investigate the assassinations. Corrupt cops of Russian decent help Teddy investigate the murders. This leads us to the motivational theory of how cultures teach people to value material success (class October 1st, slide 1). These cops are suppose to be the “good guys,” but yet they are the deviant ones, because of valuing material success over doing what is right. Two of the corrupt cops, Remark and Paterson, extort businesses for money. One of the establishments that they extort happens to be one of Roberts coworkers’ mother.

The cops had set one of the ducts in the restaurant on fire and claimed there would be another incident if the next payment is not paid on time. Robert takes a video of them extorting the mom of his friend and tells them if they do not return the money, the video is going to be released to the media. The cops’ deviance is condemned by Robert as he asks them to do what is righteous. The deviance portrayed by the cops serves a purpose in the film, because it makes Robert seem more heroic and the Russian mafia the inferior to the viewers. Teddy the Mobster, sends a man into the inner to kill Robert.

He quickly notices that the man in the diner dressed as a construction worker is not there Just to eat. When the man approaches Robert with a gun in hand, Robert hits the man with his book and slams his head on the table braking his neck. Once again, Robert kills somebody else which is a form of deviance in our society, this time he had probable cause, which makes this situation not seem as a deviancy but more as defense. Viewers most likely didn’t have any negative reaction towards Robert. To conclude, there is a lot of deviancy in The Equalizer to e diagnosed. There are different levels of deviancy throughout the entire film.

There are mainly two types of deviant behavior, one to be thought of as unacceptable and another as means for a good cause, which is what Roberts main goal is. His acts of deviancy are not viewed by the spectators as deviant, because they do fallow any negative reactions from the public. With Alien we feel that Slavs was being deviant by taking away one of the most important rights, freedom from Alien. As the audience we knew that this wasn’t right and we felt bad for Alien. When people think of cops, hey usually think they are the “good guys,” but that is not the case in this film.

These cops that were part of the Russian Mafia helped and covered crimes of the mafia. This seems to make the viewers have a stronger reaction because they are not Just being crooks; they are in whom we trust. Deviancy is one of the biggest parts of our society. One can really evaluate deviancy in a film, because there always seems to be a good and a bad guy. Although films aren’t necessarily all true, we can see and evaluate the different types of reactions towards deviancy, which would happen in the real world if these scenarios existed.
