The American Dream for men in the 1920’s was to get rich and make a lot of money how ever they can no matter what - The Great Gatsby introduction. For women an American Dream was to do men’s work and have equal rights between men and women’s working and living conditions. Only for some people in different social classes were their dreams attained. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby so he can show society that an American Dream is what people make of it and their not always achievable. James Gatz’s American Dream was to have the love of his life. Daisy and Gatsby were two lovers.

When Gatsby was drafted off to war he had to leave behind Daisy for the battle. Once Gatsby arrived home from battle he was expecting Daisy to be waiting for him with open arms but she wasn’t. Gatsby’s dream was not attained because the reason he has made himself successful was to impress Daisy. He’s always hoping he has a chance with her. Not only knowing that she is not the same teenage beauty that he once knew but she does have a husband and family at home. The challenges he has faced were things like almost dying trying to survive in battle just to see her again.

Working so hard to be a wealthy man just to please her. The whole purpose of living and making something of himself was all for her. Gatsby says to Nick “I can’t describe to you how surprised I was to find out I loved her, old sport. I even hoped for a while that she’d throw me over, but she didn’t, because for a while she was in love with me too. ” (157) Gatsby couldn’t believe that women like Daisy could actually love him. He wished that she would just forget about him but she doesn’t because at that time she really loved him.

Daisy Buchanan’s American Dream was to do what everyone expects of her. She wanted to please the people and live a happy life. The problems Daisy has faced trying to attain her dream were that she fell in love with Gatsby who was poor and not in her social class. Daisy’s parents did not approve of Gatsby before he went off to battle. She did attain her dream because she married a rich man and had a beautiful little girl with him. Daisy also stayed in her own social class. Daisy did attain her dream because she married a very rich man and had a beautiful little girl with him.

She also stayed inside her own social class. She has become someone that everyone expected her to be. Tom Buchanan’s American Dream was to remain in a position of power over everyone while being respected within and only by the white society. Tom wasn’t the kind of man who like mixed relations. He was the kind of man who likes to be in control and he likes to be in a high class community. The problems he has faced trying to attain his dream were when Gatsby showed up and was trying to take Daisy away form him.

Tom wasn’t concerned at first because he’s a stereotype and he didn’t; think Daisy would do that to him even though he does it to her over and over again with her knowing. Toms American Dream was attained because no matter what, Daisy will always come back to him. Tom loves Daisy to death; even though she knows everything he has done to her she will always end up going back with Tom. Tom says to Gatsby “And what’s more, I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time”.

A person can’t love someone and mess around with other women and say that they’re still in love with that other person because that’s; not real love. Tom is blinded by love to see that Daisy doesn’t really love him the way he loves her. An American Dream for men in the 1920’s was to get rich and make billons. Women’s were to be independent and do what the men were doing and be respected for it. Not a lot of people in other social classes were their dreams actually attained. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby to show society that dreams are attained only if people make them attainable.
