Parents find that their children will keep sitting in front of the computer when they have some free time, even a couple of minutes breaking time. According to a study (Telegraph,2009), teenagers spend an average of 31 hours a week online and nearly two hours a week looking at pornography. Online games are the first choice which they play alone or with their friends over the web. Chatting online, instant message and the feeling of surfing the Internet can be paid the children’s attention too. As a result, they have less times communicate with their friends and talk to the others directly, face to face.
To growing children, it will obstruct the development of social skills. It’s less likely to participate outdoor activities. When teenagers spend the whole time on Internet, their parents have to provide a pair of glasses for children’s eyes and hope that they can reduce the damage from the computer. The sources of this negative effect contain not only pornography and violence but also the other unhealthy sorts of information. There is no doubt that investigating porn sites online can be attractive to teenagers, especially boys.
Perhaps not surprisingly, boys are much more likely to seek out pornography than girls, and use increases with age, research finds. In the UNH team’s study, for instance, 38 percent of 16- and 17-yea-rold male Internet users deliberately visited X-rated sites in the past year, compared with 8 percent of girls (American Psychological Association,2007:38). It’s also possible that some using free illegal software or downloaded free movies give them more pornography links. Pornography and violent must not be known by children in the law.
But there is almost nothing to obstruct between children and them on the Internet. Children can download violent picture, games and movies anytime. While not it’s surely that some children wouldn’t spend their rest time on Online Game like the others. They attempt to learn the knowledge about Internet. For example, the content which they are interested in is that how to use the Internet to get free music documents, movies and anything they want. Certainly, they may create new programs through their own imagination. It must be the reason why these issues appear.
Because they are too young to know how their action will damage people. According to Eric J. Sinrod and William P. Reilly(2000), ” Cyber-crime, once the domain of disaffected genius teenagers as portrayed in the movies ‘War Games’ and ‘Hackers’, has grown into a mature and sophisticated threat to the open nature of the Internet. ” After they are fluent in writing code and use software, hacking which may be operate by them can’t be omitted. To these children, hacking attack, controlling some company’s operating systems are just jokes.
As a devastating program, viruses are also becoming their toys spending free time with the computer. Apparently, recent laws actually don’t work on punish illegal Internet activities, especially teenagers and children. Eric J. Sinrod and William P. Reilly claim that “further complicating cyber-crime enforcement is the area of legal jurisdiction. Like pollution control legislation, one country can not by itself effectively enact laws that comprehensively address the problem of Internet crimes without cooperation from other nations. ” In addition, many countries have own laws that protect the minor.
It leads to a fact that the law is inefficient to teenager on Internet crime. Compare with adults, teenagers and children have too much free time without working or studying, and they don’t have enough wariness when they face strangers. Chat online offers a effective way to waste their time. The one disadvantage of it is possibility that personal information is divulged, including family address, phone number and EMAIL address. Another problem is that the person who you are chatting with may be anyone, like pedophiles or robbers.
Among the teenagers, girls are much easier to hurt and be dangerous. However, the positive effects of Internet on teenagers and children exist truly. In fact, if Internet can be seen as a risk to the development of children, on the other hand, it’s an opportunities, too. As Sonia Livingstone and Ellen Helsper (2010:12) stated:” These opportunities are widely judged to include learning, communication, participation, creativity, expression and entertainment , a heterogeneous set of activities for which there is considerable optimism and public/private sector provision. In other words, the problems which mentioned in previous paragraph brought by Internet could change to be the opportunities. Playing online games makes them know how to do teamwork with friends. Chatting with strangers online is just a chance practicing the gift of tongue if they know that how to protect themselves and enjoy the chatting time. All of them are with questions necessary step among growth period of children. Except for these aspects, children don’t have to take a great number of hours to search the information which they need to write down in the library and worry about losing their way.
The keyboard and mouse could help them to finish all the work. On the other hand, it’s the fact that the some bad aspects could be changed to helpful conditions. For example, if teenagers just use chat online for making friends, not indulge in it, it’s unnecessary that parents worry about their children too much. Chat online could improve the ability of language and social skills remarkably. The essay indicates that the effects of Internet on the development of children and teenagers are both positive and negative.
Every great invention appears in this world always accompanies with many disadvantages can’t be overlook. In the years when Edison was alive, no one would give up on hunger of light at night though power generation equipment is difficult to make. It’s all need to do that finding the solution of every problem. The List of References Teenagers ‘spend an average of 31 hours online’ (2009,10th February).
