The threat of genetically modified foods Essays

The threat of genetically modified foods

Genetically modified foods are believed to have the power to change many of the world’s problems regarding agriculture, food and nutrition. Genetically foods, being scientifically engineered can be placed with more nutrients that some people believe will solve the problem of world hunger in most regions around the world.(Teitel, 1999) Promoters of genetically modified foods say that people in the third world country, which has long suffered from malnutrition and lack of food, can be helped by the genetically modified food technology. Farmers too can be helped with the technology as GM foods are said to resist different farming problems thus contributing to the more effective sustainability of growing GM foods beneficial for the country that experiences these problems. Genetically modified organisms also are engineered to produce their own pesticides thus eliminating one of the most common techniques in agriculture, sprayed toxins.(Hawkes, 2000) But I believe the bad side towards genetically modified foods outweighs its good side.
There are promising qualities of the technology and potential truth to being one of the major solutions in the world’s problem today. But there still is the lack of through scientific research to back this up. Scientific research regarding genetically modified foods has failed to show its long term and short term effects to the society. One example is the case when scientist tested GM on rats and resulted to side effects of the rats suffering form stunted growth and damaged immune system.(Kowalski, 2002) Another example is when scientists genetically engineered yeast to make it last longer but found out that it had produced more potentially toxic chemical than it had when it was being modified.(Kowalski, 2002) There is the threat of its side effects on the health of people and this is according to science research.
Genetically modified organisms are popular today and some consumers do not know they are consuming the product of this technology. One example is soybean. Soybean used in other products such as cereal and milk had consumers disregard the fact that some products available to them today can be traced to a genetically modified soybean.(Glimpse, 2004) Two other food sources that are genetically modified are corn and rice. The consumption of food genetically modified is dangerous because consumers does not really know whether they are consuming genetically modified foods already as some products does not reveal the genetically modified organisms used and some are being disguised into other forms. There also lacks proper laws from the food and agriculture sector regarding the strict monitoring and implementation of regulations for genetically modified foods. Consumers can not detect the products because some companies adopting the genetically modification technology does not mention it on their labels. Companies worry the cost in indicating genetically modified ingredients and fears of profit loss, but this should be a proper way for consumers to know what they are eating. There are also medical research conducted showing that genetically modified foods can trigger allergies, interrupt nature’s food chain, create new from of species that is hard to control, increase antibiotic resistance among humans and cause vitamin overdose.(Ruse, 2002) There is a possibility that one consumer can suffer from this consequence as she unknowingly eat the foods she was not supposed to because it was not properly indicated as genetically modified.
Consumers have the right to know what they are eating and until genetically modified foods are proven scientifically harmless to any organism, they should not be grown in nature as it interrupts the natural ecological processes of our environment. They should not also be mixed with any other food source as such increase the threat of suffering from any side effects of eating genetically modified organisms. There are still potential problems and effects of genetically modified organisms and this should be enough basis why they should not be grown, manufactured or sell for human consumption.
