Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the oldest medical systems in the world and is based on the philosophy of the principles of holistic medicine. The goal of TCM and each of the treatments is to integrate the mind, body, and spirit in order to prevent illness and promote ultimate wellness. 2. ) The roots of TCM extend back to antiquity, originating with the study of the healing properties of plants and flowers.

He regularly went to the countryside to collect and test the healing properties of hundreds of plants, using himself as the test subject. Sheng Nung’s work was carried on by Huang Ti. Helping him was his court physician, Qi Bo. Together they developed the first detailed system for diagnosing a variety of diseases conditions and cataloged herbs that could treat them. 3. ) There are seven different therapies that are a part of TCM.

The first one is called diet therapy. This consists of keeping a proper diet and having goo nutrition to maintain optimal health.

The second one is called chinese herbal medicine. The herbs are classified into sixteen different categories and further categorized by appearance and taste. They can be taken many different ways, but the most common way is internally. Acupuncture is the third part and this is the most popular form of TCM. It seeks to achieve a calming sensation by using small needles. They will feel a relaxing feeling in the area that the needle is inserted into. The fourth therapy is called moxibustion. This consists of applying moxa (mugwort) to the acupoints. The fifth therapy is called cupping.

This is a method of stimulating the acupoints. The sixth therapy is massage. It is basically just pressure on the body to relieve pain. The last type is called Tai Chi Chaun and qigong. These are both systems of exercise that incorporate breath work, visualization, and movement. They help to reduce stress, muscular tension, and enhance flexibility and posture. 4. ) Acupuncture works by finding any imbalances in the body. It doesn’t just focus on the symptoms that may come with certain illnesses, but more so the underlying factors that contribute to the illness.

It seeks to rearrange the flow of the energy throughout the body to improve internal organ function. 5. ) Some conditions that benefit from TCM and acupuncture are acute sinusitis, acute rhinitis, common cold, acute tonsillitis, acute bronchitis, bronchial asthma, acute conjunctivitis, myopia, cataract, central retinitis, hiccough, spasms, gastroptosis, acute and chronic gastritis, gastric hyperacidity, chronic ulcer, acute chronic colitis, constipation, diarrhea, headache, migraine, facial palsy, tennis elbow, low back pain, and osteoarthritis.
