Employment in every aspect opens new doors and windows of opportunity.  Employees are presented with an opportunity to expand creativity and further an education through hands-on experience.  Working environments may not always be pleasant.  Employees may encounter an overbearing supervisor, hostility from co-workers, and sexual harassment.  Sexual harassment is evident when a supervisor abuses their authority by pressuring an employee to conform to sexual demands in exchange for continued employment or promotions.  It can also occur through co-workers via tasteless jokes and comments with sexual innuendos.  Sexual harassment does not happen just between a supervisor and an employee, but it also takes place among employees.

If a male employee were to ask a female co-worker out on a date, this would not constitute grounds for sexual harassment so long as it were an isolated incident.  If the female co-worker declined the invitation from the male co-worker, and he continued to persist in asking her out on a date, then it would be considered sexual harassment.  A one time incident, in this scenario, would very much be isolated and less likely to occur again for several reasons.  The male employee may realize that the female co-worker is simply not interested in pursuing a relationship outside of the workplace.  The male employee may also suffer a temporary collapse of the male ego.  Ultimately, the male employee would simply take her negative response to his invitation for what it was meant to be; a respectful decline.

If a male supervisor were to ask a female employee out on a date, the situation becomes a little less cut-and-dry.  The supervisor would have demonstrated that an ethical line had been crossed.  Most businesses discourage fraternization between management and employees.  It should be noted that as long as the male supervisor did not pressure, threaten, or promise the employee, then the incident would be deemed as isolated and not a sexual harassment issue.
