A transformational change leader is a charismatic, heroic or visionary leader - Transformational Change Leader Essay introduction. A charismatic leader produces significant organizational change because he leads his followers to pursue organizational goals, sacrificing self-interest. He transforms his followers “by creating changes in their goals, values, needs, beliefs and aspirations” (Kreitner and Kinicki, 2003, p. 614). A charismatic leader develops value and positive change in his followers by enhancing their morale and personal identity through motivation and inspiration. As a good leader, he is courageous and uses his intellectual skills to face challenges and difficult situations. He emphasizes symbolic leader behavior, intellectual stimulation of his followers, and self-sacrifice.

A transformational or charismatic leader has three key sets of leader behavior. First, he is able to establish a common vision of the future. He has a high level of confidence, patience and optimism which allows him to develop this vision and translate it into action. Second, the charismatic leader establishes higher performance expectations and standards and he is confident in his followers’ ability to meet these expectations. He is open to the ideas of others and is ready to listen to his followers. Lastly, he develops and follows a set of essential values, traits and beliefs which makes him a role model for others.

A transformational change leader knows the things that lead to the failure or success of a change effort. When faced with problems, he has the ability to think analytically and to compartmentalize problems into parts. Because he is held accountable for the change effort, he is committed to this change and gives his best attempt to make it successful. As a change leader, he understands the role of each stakeholder and the importance of support to the success of the effort. He knows that each individual adapts to change in a different manner and he uses this knowledge to help and guide his followers.
