The fact that transportation is an element without which an organization can hardly be expected to function becomes all the more significant when combined with the fact that transportation also serves as few of the most volatile operations of the organization considering the immense potential for costs that may include congestion, crashes, injuries, fatalities air pollution and noise that it holds (Ballou, 2003).

In order to function properly, the transport department of an organization need to a considerable amount of input from numerous sources within the organization. Channels that can act as inputs to the transportation system of an organization include channels such as information pertaining to operations and management, labor, land, energy and vehicular maintenance. As a combined result of these factors and more factors that may exist and vary from scenario to scenario, the transportation system functions to serve a multitude of causes such as services pertaining to a product, emergency services, as a work related modes of conveyance, a means of transporting raw material inbound and freighting finished products through outbound logistics. As these processes occur, the transportation department causes implications to be subjected upon the environment around the scenario, the degree of safety that each member of the personnel associated with the transportation department experiences, the health implications that the members suffer and the time and effort used in the process of the transportation of the merchandise and/or personnel.

There are two elements that are of considerable importance when one is studying the fundamentals of logistics, these include the infrastructure design and the interaction between the system capacities with its use.

When the transportation department of an organization functions, there are a number of expenditures that it requires besides monetary expenditures. For one, the transportation department functions involve the generation of a number of side effects. For instance, when the transportation operations are carried out, the personnel carrying out the transportation operations undergo tendencies to experience increased morbidity and mortality due to the pollution to which they are exposed. The dangers involved in the transportation process make the personnel associated and involved with the transportation operations vulnerable to injuries and fatalities because of the decreased safety levels to which the personnel have no other option but to operate in. Also, more than often transportation operations involve heavy machinery and vehicles that produce significant levels of noise which serves to act as a potential cause for the deterioration of the quality of life and property because of the emission of carbon in scenarios where fuel is used in vehicles that have significant carbon emission rates. In cases such as these, not only are the personnel associated at a risk but also the environment within which the transportation operations are taking place (Hester & Harrison, 2004). All these factors are attributed to be the inevitable costs of the functioning of transportation.

When studying transportation one can classify transportation with respect to the different means of transportation that exist. These can include common means such as highways, railways, airborne transportation, and pipelines for the transportation of gas or fluids. Classifications such as these can then be subjected to further internal classification such as the means of transportation that pertain to mass transit and those that pertain to private transportation and those that pertain to the transport of non-human objects. As transportation processes take place within the framework of a society, it is more than common to experience scenarios where the numerous modes and means of transportation either come into contact with each other or are designed to operate collectively in order to perform a task that requires a combined effort. An airport can be taken as an example of a scenario where multiple modes and means of transport function simultaneously to carry out a function (Black, 1981).

Transportations is what makes the world go round, it is involved in every world that concerns the promotion of human life, economy, medicine, business, services, shopping, and emergencies etc. Transportation is what lends aid to them all. It provides vehicles to many different systems. The major benefit that Transportation renders is that it cuts down on man’s time and effort. Fact of the matter is goods reach from one destination. There are many links that are required to bring about the output that is Transportation. The technology, the man power, the organized overall strategy that decides the requirements of custom designed vehicles to make the systems work.

Transportation is often categorized into various different modes of infrastructure; those are rail, highway, air etc. The Highways however are further divided into various sub categories depending on the vehicle type, motorcycles, cars, buses, trailers, bicycles, trucks etc.

Even though transportation is of the utmost importance, all modes of transportation come with the heavy burden of danger. Speed is the benefit, while pollution, exhaust fumes, noise pollution, accidental mishaps, fatalities etc. are the byproduct of this brain child.

But apparently its benefits far surpass the negative criterions that transportation poses, after goods cannot be delivered in time if they go walking, or moving from one country to the other would be virtually impossible if it were not for transport.  The importance of Transportation can be clearly detected from the fact that the economy of transportation depends on the supply and demand curve of transportation to see which supersedes which and how the demand of which category of transportation runs parallel to the supply of goods. Forecasting as well lays claim to the importance of transportation. Trip Generation is in fact the first step in the four step Forecasting process which is followed by Destination Choice, Mode Choice and Route Choice. This four step process is used mainly to forecast travel demands. Fact of the matter is every trip has two ends or rather two destinations, one where the trip begins and the other where it ends. Forecasting determines the knowledge of what these two destinations are. Furthermore transportation is divided depending on the activities or lifestyles of certain people, transportation according to residential and non residential zones, the various routes etc. The example of an airport to be a scenario where multiple forms of the modes and means of transport can be seen as one of the few scenarios where transportation does not simply take place from what can be referred to as one physical address to another physical address, but within the same address as well. An inter-airport taxi may carry people from one gate to the other within the same building and pipes from the storage unit may supply an aircraft parked in the hanger with fuel.
