Being in the military I’ve learned that knowing where and when your supposed to be somewhere is highly important. Along with being on time you must always know what uniform and what additional gear is supposed to brought with you. You must follow all guidelines and directions from your appointed leadership so any operation or movement within your unit can be conducted properly, and safely. At all times you must comply with the army’s rules and regulations or it can be punishable under UCMJ.

With these few simple requirements the time spent in the the United states military should pass really quickly.

When given direction from your leadership to be at a formation, or any other type of work call is important for several reasons. First off would be accountability, which allows your leadership to maintain and track where soldiers are and what they are doing. Second it allows your leadership to know that you are not stuck in a ditch on the side of the road or that you haven’t gone “absent without leave”.

Third its a standard and part of being in a daily routine for everyone no matter what rank has been earned, it’s part of working a one unit instead of as individuals.

Lot of the time in the military your given an appointed place of duty that coordinates with your units function and maintainability. Whether its CQ, staff duty, or any other additional duty you must show up on time and with the proper gear. This allows your unit to function and run properly without additional stress or wear on soldiers. These duties are checks and balances allowing more supervision on what goes on in the barracks, as well as the battalion. Regardless of what is needed at work these duties always take precedents over normal work-call.

When found to be out of ranks, you will be referred to as a failure to report and can be punished under the “Uniform code of military justice,” (UCMJ) under article 92. Article 92 covers “ Failure to obey a lawful Order”. When given a time and place to be it is considered a lawful order and must be followed as part of the conformities of the military. Not showing up to your appointed place of duty can result in a verbal or written counseling where if the appointed leader seems necessary corrective action will be enforced.

If you have received multiple counsellings under this article you can be recommended an article 15 or for involuntary separation from the army, on the grounds of failure to adapt, or for patterns of misconduct. Article 92 is perhaps the most important article in the Uniform Code of Military Justice. It lays down the ground law, the absolute line which should not be crossed. Everything else in the UCMJ is explanation of a specific variant of disobeying an order . Without Article 92, soldiers would be free to do whatever they want, whenever they want, and wouldn’t be any more accountable than a civilian .

We are the base of our countries defenses, we as a whole are the guardians of freedom and the american way of life. Without us, this country would not exist, and could not exist. To keep America this way , we must be professional, strong, unified, and accountable. One team, one fight. And if one person is unlawfully disobeying this, it undermines the basis of all of our training . If the Commander of a unit can’t count on his orders being obeyed, without question, right away and to the best ability of the soldier who is given them, then he might as well be sitting out there by himself.

The military can only function if orders, when given, are obeyed. And, as much as we would like to trust in the honesty and integrity of the men and women who made that oath, put their lives on the line for their country, and fight to keep our brothers and sisters free, the sad truth is that there are many out there that, if not given a clear set of rules, a clear set of punishments for transgressions, will not follow the rules, will not care about the punishments, will not be productive, efficient members of the military.

That is why Article 92, and the entire UCMJ, are necessary. They reinforce the behavior of those who do the right thing. They punish those who do not do the right thing, ending such behaviors. With such a system, the bad eggs, those who are unfit to fight will be separated before they can cause any more problems from within the ranks . . Accountability is the backbone of the United states military, and allows us to successfully operate but also allows our leadership to make sure our lives are safe and in order.

Missing morning formation can result in myself or other soldier getting in trouble, and raises a red flag to the leadership that something may be wrong. When soldiers don’t show up to formation, or their appointed place of duty it not only will hurt themselves but will make the soldiers around them carry a heavier UN-necessary workload.
