“Vanity Fair” book review “Vanity Fair” by William Makepeace Thackeray is a satirical novel of manners, first published in 1848. It has received impressive reviews and is most recognizable out of all Thackeray’s works. Nowadays it is considered to be one of the classic books that everyone should read. The action of the novel takes place in 19th century. The main plot concentrates on lives of two women, Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley, who although friends, are very different from one to another. Becky comes from a poor family and is conscious that her only way to wealth goes through marriage.

She is crafty, spiteful, cunning, and at the same time very intelligent and determined to get whatever she wants. Amelia is a naive, ingenuous, good-hearted daughter of rich London merchant, who only dreams about marriage with her beloved George Osborne. The story follows these two women through their lives. In “Vanity Fair” William Thackeray shows the stupidity, vanity and hypocrisy of people from all social classes. In my opinion every character is an example of a different kind of human behaviour.

In a pursuit of the happiness everyone do whatever is needed to attain their life’s goals – for one it may be wealth and for another one the happiness of loved person. It is rather hard to say who would enjoy this book and who would not. Frankly speaking I have to admit that I do not like that type of books but to my great surprise it turned out to be very interesting and absorbing. I definitely recommend that novel to everyone, because the truths it contains are universal and all of the people can learn something about life from it.
