It takes a few years before a new language forms. Languages change because civilizations advance and move on to different places where two languages mix and form a sub-language or a completely new language. Many languages share common factors, for example similar grammars, overlapping and similar words. These common factors also help trace the language to its origin. Vernacular languages are the commonly spoken language. A number of vernacular languages emerged from Latin in the beginning of the 12th century.

At the time of the Roman Empire, Latin was the most popular means of communication. According to M. U. S. E material, “Latin had more than one form and changed over time because it was both written and spoken, and the educational level or social status of the writer or speaker often determined the final form of the language. ” Education and literacy in Latin was not wide spread. It was only for wealthy people and people who were associated with a church. As the Roman Empire expanded its territories, Latin served the common grounds for the people of various backgrounds.
Latin literacy greatly flourished at the time of Carolingian Renaissance. Because Charlemagne knew the importance of literacy, he invited Alcuin for personal tutoring and to establish literacy create curriculum for young children. However, Latin was still mostly for the upper class. Literacy awareness in vernacular language was very much appreciated by women in the 12th century. Female poets of French Vernacular were famous for the romantic poems; commonly known as “courtly love. ” Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the famous women who nfluenced romance in troubadour poetry. The courtly love is a false relationship between a knight and his lord. The knight servers his lady in obedience knowing that there is no true affection involved. She is also in control of her feelings. Troubadour poetry was written in vernacular language to reach wide audience. People enjoyed the troubadour poetry because it was written in the simple, easy to understand and commonly spoken language. It was easy for them to relate their situation to the Troubadour poetry. (Sayre, 2012). Sayre, H. M. lso mention that, “The medieval romance was designed to entertain a broad audience with stories of adventure and love, while it pretended to be an actual historical account of Charlemagne, King Arthur, or Roman legend. ”(p. 167). Troubadour poetries helped people kind of enjoy the romance that they always wished for themselves. Many marriages at that time were arranged and were for more political reasons. People found affection in Troubadour poetries. German started vernacular before French back in 10th century; however, the effort in preserving the German language failed.
During the 12th century, many French stories were translated in German language in order to have the language preserved. People preferred to have literature in vernacular language than in Latin. (Tillotson) According to Sayre (2013), “In many ways, the English language was shaped by Anglo-Saxon traditions. ” (p. 147). Literature from this time period is one of a kind. Beowulf is an English poem; however, it covers the events that took place in Scandinavia. Beowulf is an ancient epic that shows stunning success of a warrior who exhibits creativity, resilience, bravery and determination. (Sayer, 2013).
Beowulf initially existed orally only; however, it took many generations to transcribe. This poem has been written with battles and funerals in mind and has covered customs that were accompanied with those events. Beowulf emotionally engages people, who can easily associate those events to their personal life experiences. Experts consider Beowulf the most distinguish piece of writing from Anglo-Saxon literature because this poem is the oldest English script available that gives insight about the Germanic way of life. Vernacular Languages became part of most the Europe by the end of 14th Century.
These languages were very well accepted all around the area. They were full of literature, art and music. It took years to build a proper grammar, spelling and basic standards for these vernacular languages. However, once established standards, even with different dialects, Vernacular Languages flourished to this day.
