Conventionally, there are many definitions of a computer according to the manufacturers and even the users define the computer according to how they see it work. Nevertheless a few definitions are existing. I will now use these definitions to assist or help anybody who has never seen or heard a computer in his or her lifetime. The few definitions are:-

1)      “A computer is an electronic machine that can store, organize and find information, do calculations and control other” that is according to the definition of a computer by Oxford Advanced Learning Dictionary 7th Edition.

2)      For others “A computer is an electronic machine that receives data, processes it and produces information ”

3)      And many will say “ A computer is a machine that does calculations”

Therefore, a computer may be defined and explained according to how it is used, where it is used, who is using it and how someone who has never seen or heard of any and what people say or marvel about it.

Approach:

            Now, here is a case of a person or someone who has never heard, who has by no means seen, who has on no account touched and even imagined that there is something somewhere in the world called a computer. It will be an uphill assignment or undertaking to define and to explain what a computer is to such an individual. But it may be as easy as descending on a mountain side depending on the approach that may be used. For this case, you need not to use any of the definitions or the explanations above.

            The best and the perfect description and or explanation of a computer to these kinds of people is “A computer is a machine that works just like a human being or the human anatomy or framework in all aspects but the difference is the human being uses blood while that machine uses electricity or power and human being is animate while the machine is inanimate”. Or it can simply be said that God made man in His image and Man has manufactured a machine or a piece of equipment that functions like him (man). Every part of the body of a man corresponds to each part of this piece of equipment accordingly i.e. if it is the head of a human being there is a corresponding part in the computer or the had of a computer; if it is the hand of a human being then there is a hand of a computer; generally whoever made a computer that person simply had the human structure in his or her mind. If it is the human brain then the computer itself has that brain as we will see or learn later; if it is the human heart then the computer has its heart inform of its system clock. And all other parts of the human being match up with all computer parts. This object or piece of equipment called a computer works like a human being in all aspects, its characteristics exhibit or demonstrate the characteristics of the same as of a human being. Further definition is, this thing called a computer has some parts that assist it to intake food, store the food that is the stomach, digest the food that is the digestion system, through some unused or unwanted food out that is the excretion organs. This thing called a computer can fall sick just like the human being does by being infected by the viruses. Human beings die of age, diseases, accidents and many other causes, at the same time as these things called computers die from the same causes. If a computer falls down or is knocked down hard it dies just as human being if knocked hard will die or pass out. A computer is a machine that is infected and affected by and with viruses just like a human being who is infected and affected by viruses and diseases. Some diseases and viruses may kill instantly and others take time to kill or kill slowly. Some diseases or viruses can be cured or prevented, thus this thing called a computer can be killed by viruses and some viruses are thwarted or prevented before they strike. They are prevented using medicine or vaccines and the viruses to these things called computers are prevented using the vaccines called anti-viruses.

            This object (computer) which is inform of a human being, but does not use blood as a human being, has parts that make it to be called a computer. The main parts of this machine perform work or duty just like the main parts of a human being. For instance, the head of a human being corresponds directly to the part of a computer called the Central Processing Unit (CPU), inside the head of the human being there is a white substance called the brain and inside the Central Processing Unit of this thing called a computer there is Arithmetic Logic Unit sometimes called the brain of the computer that works exactly like the human brain. Therefore, the human brain is like the Arithmetic Logic Unit of this thing called a computer. What does the human brain do? It does calculations. So the same part of a computer does calculations like the human brain!

This Arithmetic Logic Unit is enclosed inside a very strong container so that it is not affect by any outside impact; likewise the human brain is protected by a very strong and hard skull. So the human brain is the Arithmetic Logic Unit and the skull represents the casing of the arithmetic Unit. This piece of equipment or computer has the memory just like a person, which is used to store or memorize pieces of information for later use. Memory applies to both the machine and the person. A computer is like the alimentary canal of the human being, right from the mouth to anus. A computer is like a person, the person takes food in the mouth, chewed, then pushed down to the stomach where it is digested and processed and lastly the waste or the unwanted is thrown out through the anus. The computer does the same, it is fed or it feeds itself (the food is data) according to the instructions given to it, then it processes is (processing the information is like digesting) and the unwanted data will be like errors which are not wanted hence rejected.

The hands of a human being stretch out and take food and put it into the mouth just like one part of a computer called the mouse, which takes data into the computer and remember data is food of the computer just like food is for a person. A computer has a nervous system just like the nervous system of human being. The nerves of a person sends signals from all over the body to the brain, hence they play a very vital role. This machine called a computer cannot function without its nervous system which is the operating system. If nerves are sending the signals in human beings then the operating system i.e. the nerves of the computer do the same job in the computer. Example, the operating system of the computer that is the nerves monitor some tasks and schedule them accordingly and if there is a problem then the nerves send signals to the brain that something is wrong somewhere. It even designates where the problem occurred, this is simply the same way human nerves work. If you are walking and the all over a certain you injure yourself the nerves send the signals to the brain that something has gone wrong somewhere and the brain directs the eyes to the point or the part that is hurt and another like the hand touches the injured part. Simply when this machine or device called a computer is working or doing something and a problem occurs the operating system that is the nerves like of a person indicate which problem and where it occurred.

Once again this machine or device called a computer is just like the human anatomy that means every part of this machine or every part that makes up this machine relates to the body parts of the human being and functions the same way. It is not unique but a reality. I will five you examples of these parts as they correspond or relate to each other. The examples are below:-

If one part of a person is missing then other parts are affected directly or indirectly that is, for instance if the hands of a human being or a person are done away with, then it will be difficult or it will require an extra effort to eat just like the keyboard of a computer missing, if it is not there then it will be difficult to type or feed the computer with data.  Imagine you as a person you lose the eyes, then automatically you cannot see what is going around and in that same context if the has no screen or monitor then you cannot see what is done in the computer or what the computer does. A human being receives signals, food; etc processes it and the responds accordingly. This object called computer does the same. To understand better, input devices of a computer keyboard, mouse, etc, are like hands eyes, nose and ears which take things into the inside of the body to be interpreted that is processed and finally the results come out. That is if you eat whatever you eat must be processed and then comes out, and this means if a computer receives data information must come out. If not so, then the computer is sick, just like if happens you eat and eat then nothing comes out at the end of the day you are sick and that sickness is constipation. A computer can be sick like a human when one of its parts is not working properly.

Inside the human body there are many complex and simple organs. Inside the computer there are also organs or parts like the memory which is like the memory of a person inside the skull, the heart which is the processor clock inside the system unit.

Last but least, you as living person, you cannot be an island. You live in a community and living a community that means there are other people around you. When living with these people you share resources of every kind. In the community you borrow from neighbors what you don’t have. Computers also live is a community that is, they are able to share resources that are shareable. They share when they are networked or connected together. If for instance one person has been infected then the whole community may be infected if great care or preventive measures are not taken. This also happens to computers which are in a community i.e. networked computers that is if there is a virus it will infect or affect all computer in the network or in the neighborhood.

In summary and conclusion, a computer is just like a human being in all and I mean in all aspects, from behavior to organs. This means when a person is kept alive by the heart pumping blood all over the body, then the computer is kept working by the electricity and the system clock. Blood is likened to the electricity and the heart is likened to the system clock or processor clock.
