There have been 200 women elected orappointed to the U.S. Congress. JeannetteRankin, Republican from Montana, was thefirst woman elected to serve in Congress. OnNovember 9, 1916, she was elected to theHouse of Representatives as Montana’sRepresentative-at-Large to the 65th Congress; she served from1917-1919. Since that time 199 other women have served inThere are a record number of women serving in the 106thCongress: 58 in the House and 9 in the Senate.

There have been 178 women elected to the House ofRepresentatives. Of these, 37 were elected to fill vacancies causedby their husbands’ deaths.

There have been 27 women elected to the Senate. Of these, 7 wereelected to fill vacancies caused by their husbands’ deaths. Fivewomen went from the House to the Senate.
