Decision Making and Productivity

Read Summary
Summary

In summary, high productivity is important for a nation as it increases the economic level, living standards, and GDP of the country while giving a competitive advantage in the market. Service jobs have lower productivity than manufacturing jobs due to various factors such as less structured environments, higher customer contact, and lower skill levels, making quality, cost, and productivity more difficult to control. To gain a competitive advantage, companies must identify consumer wants or needs and achieve a perfect match between those and the organization’s goods and services. Whirlpool achieved productivity gain by changing the production process and teaching workers to improve quality, benefiting the company, stockholders, customers, and workers. Productivity and quality are related as improving quality leads to better output, reduced costs, and fewer defective parts. A company can afford to pay its workers for productivity gains through more savings, which are shared with workers.
