Because services represent an increasing share of the economy, this places added importance to understanding and dealing with the challenges of managing services. Jobs in service environments are often less structured than in manufacturing environments. Customer contact is usually much higher in services. In many service, worker skill levels are low compared to those of manufacturing workers. Because of these factors, quality and cost are more difficult to control along with productivity. According to Stevenson (2009 pg. 57) states “service productivity is more problematic than manufacturing productivity. In many situations, it is more difficult to measure, and thus to manage. Numerous factors affect productivity, generally they are methods, capital, quality, technology, and management. Some of the problems include fax machines, copiers, the internet, search engines, voice mail, automation, calculators, computers email and software”.
How can a company gain a competitive advantage by having a higher productivity than its competitors? In order to gain a competitive advantage by having higher productivity than its competitors, companies must be able to identify consumer wants or needs. This is a basic input in an organizations decision making process, and central to competitiveness. The idea is to achieve a perfect match between those wants and needs and the organizations goods and services. Pricing is usually a key factor in consumer buying decisions. It is important to understand the tradeoff decision consumers make between price and other aspects of a product or service such as quality.
