The influence of the global village on an individual’s life values can be observed through interactions involving the modern globalized world, telecommunications, and technology. Facebook (FB) and other social media platforms have had a significant impact on shaping our perception of values; however, they also possess limitations.
Facebook has both positive and negative effects on the Global village, where people can interact through social media. The Facebook login page showcases a global map and linked people, symbolizing connections within the Global village. A quote on the page emphasizes how Facebook helps connect and share with others, further illustrating its role in building a more interconnected world. However, Facebook can hinder face-to-face communication, impacting our ability to directly interact with others. Additionally, social media, especially Facebook, greatly influences how we value others in society and the global village, with both positive and negative outcomes.
The play A Man With Five Children (M5C) by Nick Enright demonstrates both the positive and negative consequences of the global village. One example is the character Gerry, the camera man, whose intentions shift over time due to technology. Initially, he wants to simply observe and document the lives of others, but eventually his perspective changes and he becomes more focused on controlling and influencing the children’s lives. This transformation highlights how technology and telecommunications can negatively impact one’s perspective and turn them into an interloper. Gerry’s primary purpose becomes filming the children, which becomes his raison d’être. Another way in which the negative aspects of the global village are explored is through Jesse and Gerry. It is shown how technology can be manipulated when Jesse asks Gerry if he likes his life, and Gerry quickly dismisses the question, indicating that he does not want to engage with the camera. This exemplifies how technology in the global village can alter an individual’s perspective and impact their values within society.Enright has demonstrated how technology can shape and positively influence an individual’s values. This is evident through the portrayal of Cameron.
At the beginning of the play, Cameron was perceived as a disrespectful and directionless child, and we expected him to amount to nothing in life. However, he unexpectedly becomes a superstar in ALF, illustrating how technology can shape and develop an individual. Despite receiving no attention from his family, Cameron finds recognition through the camera, which helps shape his identity. Nevertheless, we also witness the detrimental effects of technology on Cameron when he sustains a back injury. As a result, he completely withdraws from any interaction with the camera.
Thus, the text highlights the negative influence of technology on our perceptions of a character. This is exemplified by Zoe’s need to apply makeup before appearing on camera, further reinforcing the idea that technology can impact our judgment of someone’s worth. However, technology can also have a positive effect on individuals, as demonstrated by Zoe’s ability to preserve a historical document of her life. This demonstrates how technology can be utilized to create a record of Zoe’s experiences, particularly her desire to showcase her baby, ultimately presenting the positive impact technology has on our interconnected global society and our esteem for Zoe.
In summary, the Global village has both positive and negative effects on our understanding of individuals. This is evident in FB, where it brings people together globally but hinders face-to-face communication. Similarly, in M5C, it can positively capture memories of children’s lives but negatively impact our perception of individuals through editing. Despite these differences, both FB and M5C illustrate how the global village can influence and shape individuals’ values.
