Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled. The United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948, recognizes that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. Such rights include freedom from torture, freedom from slavery and forced labor, freedom of religion, the right to free speech and association, the right to due process under the law, the right to life, liberty and security of person, the right to own property and equality before the law. Human rights are universal, indivisible and interdependent. All individuals are entitled to these rights without discrimination. In recognition of that fact, governments have a responsibility to respect and promote human rights within their own borders, while individuals have a responsibility to respect the human rights of others. Human rights are protected by international law and agreements as well as national laws. When violations occur, remedies need to be provided promptly and effectively .
