Romeo and Juliet are the two main characters in the play. Their love story begins when Romeo meets Juliet at a party thrown by the Capulets, who are feuding with the Montagues. Romeo is instantly smitten with Juliet and vows to win her over. The next day, he meets Juliet again at a party and declares his love for her, but she dismisses him, saying that her father would never allow them to marry because of their feuding families. The next day, Romeo attends another party thrown by the Capulets where he sees Juliet again. She tells him that if he truly loves her, he should leave town for a few days so that she can think about whether or not she wants to marry Paris. He agrees to do so and leaves Verona for several days before returning home again. When Romeo returns home from traveling around Italy for several days, he learns from Benvolio (a friend) that there’s been some trouble between their two families: Tybalt (a member of the Capulet family) had killed Mercutio (a member of the Montague family), who was also Romeo’s friend; now Tybalt has been killed by Prince Escalus himself.
