Founded in 1957, Stony Brook University is a public research university located in Stony Brook, New York. The university is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and is home to one of the largest medical schools in the country.
Stony Brook’s history dates back to 1957 when the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees created a new public institution in Oyster Bay, Long Island. In 1963, the school relocated to its current location in Stony Brook and became known as State University College at Stony Brook.
The college expanded over time and added several new schools including the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SMAS), School of Social Welfare and Public Policy, School of Health Technology & Management and School of Business. Since then, it has also been recognized by U.S News & World Report as one of “America’s Best Colleges” as well as one of “America’s Best Value Colleges” for its quality education at an affordable price point.
The University’s academic programs span over 200 majors and 90 minors that cover a wide range of disciplines, including business administration, arts & sciences and health professions. The school also offers over 30 doctoral programs across multiple departments.
Stony Brook is also known for its athletic programs which include football, basketball, baseball, soccer and lacrosse among others.
