Cold Mountain is a classic American movie from 2003, directed by Anthony Minghella and starring Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renée Zellweger, and Donald Sutherland. The film was based on the novel by Charles Frazier and follows Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman) and Inman (Jude Law), two lovers who are separated during the Civil War. Inman leaves to fight for the Confederate army but eventually deserts in order to make his way home to reunite with Ada and their beloved Cold Mountain.
Inman’s journey home is a difficult one; he encounters danger at every turn, including Union deserters, angry Confederates, and violent criminals. Throughout his journey he meets a colorful cast of characters who offer advice or shelter him as he continues on his quest. These characters include Veasey Suttree (Natalie Portman), Ruby Thewes (Renée Zellweger), Stobrod Thewes (Philip Seymour Hoffman), Pangle (Ray Winstone), Sara (Eileen Atkins), and Reverend Monroe (Donald Sutherland).
Meanwhile, Ada has her own struggles to face back at Cold Mountain. She must learn how to survive on her own as she takes care of the farmstead with help from Ruby and Stobrod. As she works hard to keep the farm running despite her grief over Inman’s absence, she begins to experience personal growth that allows her to gain strength and independence in spite of all odds.
