The University of Iowa is a public research university located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1847 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm, but was renamed ten years later to honor the commander who fought at the Battle of Palo Alto in the Mexican–American War.
The university is organized into eleven colleges offering more than 200 undergraduate majors and programs and more than 90 graduate degrees. The university also operates eight research centers organized around interdisciplinary research themes and four professional student organizations. The university owns and operates an airport named after John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth.
In addition, The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is a teaching hospital for medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, allied health and other health professions affiliated with the University of Iowa College of Medicine. It is a Level I trauma center located on the eastern edge of the campus in Iowa City. The hospital serves as an affiliated teaching site for medical trainees from other universities such as Colorado State University, Creighton University School of Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine-Indianapolis Campus, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (Nursing), Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (Nursing) and more.
