The University of Connecticut is a public research university in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It was founded in 1881, and is also one of the institutions of the State University System of Connecticut. The school offers more than 400 majors at the bachelor’s level and more than 70 master’s degree programs. There are also several doctoral programs available at UConn including doctorates in medicine, law and engineering (civil).
The main campus is located in Storrs, Connecticut and it has satellite campuses in Hartford, Stamford, and Waterbury. As of 2014, UConn had an enrollment of 29,448 students and 10,329 employees on its main campus and 2,500 on its satellite campuses. The university offers 138 degree programs to over 28,000 students per year as well as online courses to students around the world.
UConn has been ranked by several publications as among the top public universities in the United States for undergraduate education; it also consistently ranks among the top universities worldwide by reputation. UConn was granted public university status in 1963 under the Morrill Act passed by then-Governor John Dempsey.
In addition, UConn’s athletic teams are nicknamed Huskies. They compete at the NCAA Division I level (FBS for football) and are members of the American Athletic Conference (The American). UConn has won four national championships: three men’s soccer titles (1985–86, 1986–87 & 1999–2000) and one women’s basketball title (2014–15).
