The University of Miami is a private, non-profit research university in Coral Gables, Florida. The university offers 116 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs to its more than 30,000 students.
In fact, The University of Miami has three campuses: the main campus in Coral Gables, Florida; the Law School in Downtown Miami; and a marine campus at Virginia Key Beach Park in Biscayne Bay.
In addition to its main campus in Coral Gables and Medical Center, the university has two regional campuses: the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) in Key Largo and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami itself. The university also has two international campuses: one in Paris, France and one in Guangzhou, China.
The university was founded in 1925 by George E. Merrick, who also donated the land on which it sits today. It was established with only 176 students and 16 faculty members in a small, rented building at 12th Street and 8th Avenue in Coral Gables. Merrick had previously donated his collection of books and manuscripts to the Stanford Medical Library after having been assured that all future donations would be accepted for the medical school’s research purposes.
The University opened with three colleges: Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education. In 1926 it added an Agricultural College to these three initial units when the first class began studying there in 1927. In 1928 it created a fourth college — Engineering — and later that year another college — Law — was formed from part of Arts & Sciences.
