Stony Brook University was founded in 1957. It is located in Stony Brook, New York on the north shore of Long Island. Stony Brook University is a public research university with its main campus located in Stony Brook, New York. It is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, and has approximately 24,500 students on the main campus. The university offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs including doctoral degrees in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, as well as master’s degrees in business administration and public health. The main campus is adjacent to the East Campus residential village and to the west of the athletics facilities.

The university has four schools; Arts and Sciences; Business (School of Management); Engineering; Health Sciences; Social Welfare (School of Social Welfare) with many PhD programs across all these schools. The university has 6 undergraduate colleges and 10 graduate colleges including: College of Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Life Sciences and Agriculture; College of Social Science and Health Professions; School of Marine & Atmospheric Science; School of Journalism, Media Studies, & Digital Arts; School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences; School of Dental Medicine.
