Hinton’s coming-of-age novel The Outsiders was published in 1967. It was written by S.E. Hinton, who grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The book tells the story of a gang of teenage boys who live on the wrong side of tracks and fight rival gangs for territory and respect. The Outsiders was one of the first young adult novels to gain popularity with adults as well as adolescents. Several film adaptations of S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders have been made, including a 1983 movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola and a 2012 stage version by the National Theater in London. The book has been taught in many high school English classes and has received both praise and criticism for its use of violence, as well as its realistic depiction of teenage life. In some schools, administrators removed it from their reading lists or restricted access to it due to a a perceived lack of literary value and its negative portrayal of adolescent life. Many critics consider The Outsiders a classic of young adult literature.
