Anse’s narration from As I Lay Dying is highly unreliable and should not be trusted. While he is often confused and forgetful, this can make him seem unreliable, there are other reasons why his narration should not be trusted.
For instance, Anse often omits information that would make him look bad. For example, when he describes how he lost his farm to the bank, he only mentions that it was because of a flood (I am referring here to the literal “flood” of water that destroys the house). He does not mention that he had been gambling and drinking heavily for years before this event occurred, which was likely what led to his financial problems. It is also very possible that Anse is lying about this aspect of his story; it could be that he never actually owned a farm at all! Perhaps it was someone else who lost their home during a flood and Anse decided to take credit for their misfortune by saying it happened to him instead.
Anse also often paints himself in a positive light while portraying others in a negative light; this is another reason why we cannot trust what he says about himself or anyone else involved with the Bundren family funeral.
