The school of thought founded by Lao Tzu is known as taoism. It stresses on the need to live in harmony with the tao, or the natural order of things.
The idea of a perfect state (the Tao) was first mentioned by Lao Tzu in his book, Tao Te Ching, which translates to ‘The Classic of the Way and its Power’. The book was written around 5th century BC and is considered a philosophical masterpiece.
In his book, Lao Tzu talks about how one should live life in peace and harmony with nature, instead of trying to dominate it or control it as we have been doing for decades now. He says that this way of living will lead us to happiness and contentment.
Taoism is based on two main principles: wu-wei (non-action), which means doing things without exerting any effort; and de (virtue), which means acting according to one’s nature rather than trying to change it. Both these ideas are very similar to other Eastern religions like Buddhism and Jainism where meditation is used for self-realization or enlightenment.
According to Taoist beliefs, when we are able to live in harmony with nature and follow its ways, we can lead a happy and healthy life. Lao Tzu believed that humans should embrace their emotions rather than suppress them and strive for inner peace rather than material wealth. He promoted simplicity and humility over extravagance and ostentation.
