Rahim Khan is a very kind man who comes from a long line of Pashtun intellectuals. He is the father figure to Amir, and he takes care of him after Amir’s father dies and his mother goes insane. Rahim Khan is always the voice of reason in Amir’s life, and he helps him to become the man he is meant to be. Because of Rahim Khan, Amir realizes what it really means to be a man. Without Rahim Khan’s guidance, Amir would never have gone back to Afghanistan to find Hassan’s son, Sohrab.
Rahim Khan was born in 1920 in Kabul, Afghanistan. He grew up surrounded by intellectuals and poets, so he has a very scholarly background. When Rahim Khan was young, he fell in love with a beautiful girl named Assef’s mother. They were engaged, but then she broke up with him because she did not want to leave Afghanistan and go live with him in India where her parents lived. Rahim Khan was heartbroken when she broke off their engagement. It took him many years before he could love again.
One of Rahim Khan’s best qualities is his loyalty to his friends and family. Despite the fact that he is poor and not educated, he remains loyal to Amir’s father even after his death. Moreover, when Hassan becomes a target for the Taliban because of his friendship with Amir, Rahim Khan plays a big part in helping Amir save Hassan’s son from being killed by the Taliban. This selfless act shows how loyal Rahim Khan really is.
