Billie Eilish is a student at Greg Heffley’s school, Westmore Middle School. She is described as “the most popular girl in school” with an “unapproachable air about her”. Due to her popularity, many students at Westmore Middle School are jealous and intimidated by her, including Greg Heffley. In fact, Greg initially believes that no one can ever compete with Billie for popularity or attention from the opposite sex. However, his opinion changes when he meets Holly Hills and realizes that other students can also be popular and successful.
At first glance it may appear that Billie Eilish has nothing to do with the plot of Diary of a Wimpy Kid; however, she plays an important role in developing Greg’s character. Through his interactions with Billie Eilish, Greg learns that he doesn’t have to be like everyone else to be popular or successful. He also learns that there are different types of success – not only does he have to worry about being popular with his peers; but he also must learn how to handle his relationships with adults as well as how to navigate through life’s trials and tribulations without giving up hope entirely.
