How much have we discovered?

Table of Content

We haven’t discovered much of our ocean. Why is that? The ocean has a lot of information that we need and the ocean plays a role in everything. It gives us information on climate, the air, water pressure, etc. We have most of our knowledge about the ocean in shallower water but the deeper waters are the mystery. Unlocking the mysteries of the deep ocean can help us find a new source for medicines, food, energy sources, and other stuff too. This is a great way to have more information on the ocean. I believe that it is better if there is more research conducted for the ocean because we do live on earth and we don’t have much knowledge about it. Having more knowledge about our earth can be very helpful and fascinating. Not only can ocean exploration help us find things but it can also help us know more about subjects and careers like science, technology, engineering, and math, STEM. We should have more ocean exploration because deeper waters can help us gather more information on it and a way that we can improve that is by helping any ocean explorers and demanding to get more recognition on it.

Let’s first start with the history of ocean exploration. Ocean exploration is a section of oceanography describing the exploration of ocean surfaces. Notable explorations have been undertaken by way of the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Polynesians, the Phoenicians, Pythia, Herodotus, the Vikings, the Portuguese, and Muslims. Scientific investigations started with early scientists such as James Cook, Charles Darwin, and Edmond Halley. James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the British Royal Navy. Charles Darwin was an English naturalist, geologist and biologist, best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. And Edmond Halley was an English astronomer, geophysicist, mathematician, meteorologist, and physicist. Ocean exploration itself coincided with the traits in shipbuilding, diving, navigation, depth, measurement, exploration, and cartography. Many ocean explorations have happened way before the technology we have now. The technology back then was advance for their day and age but very different from our technology now. For example, even before America was “discovered” by Christopher Columbus there were many ship explorations. Explorers would travel all around the world to discover more land. What was also different about ocean exploration back then is the tools that they would use. Back then they would use compasses, maps, instruments for measuring latitude, and navigational clocks. With that being said, understanding the world’s oceans can be very beneficial for us. With all of the history and background that we have with ocean exploration, we can discover and learn more about our own earth. Additionally, with the discoveries, we can use the research and information for a lot of different things. For example, we can discover new species of animals, medicines, an energy source, etc.

Ocean exploration is about making discoveries, looking for matters that are uncommon and unexpected. Ocean exploration, however, is no longer randomly wandering in hopes of discovering something new. It is disciplined and prepared and consists of rigorous observations and documentation of biological, chemical, physical, geological, and archaeological factors of the ocean. Findings made through ocean exploration are vital to decreasing unknowns in deep-ocean areas and presenting high-value environmental genius wanted to address each modern and rising science and administration needs. Exploration helps to make certain that ocean assets are now not simply managed, however, managed well, so these assets are round for future generations to enjoy. Through ocean exploration, we can set up the baseline statistics that wanted to higher apprehend environmental change. Information from ocean exploration is essential to everyone. Unlocking the mysteries of deep-sea ecosystems can divulge new sources for clinical drugs, food, power resources, and different products. Information from deep-ocean exploration can assist predict earthquakes and tsunamis and assist us to recognize how we are affecting and being affected by way of modifications in Earth’s environment. Ocean exploration can enhance ocean literacy and encourage younger human beings too are searching for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Albert). The challenges of exploring the deep ocean can grant the foundation for technological know-how and engineering improvements that can be utilized in different situations.

There might be a lot of expenses with exploring the ocean but so does space and we continue to do that. So why not explore the ocean? There are a lot of interesting things we can find in the depths of the ocean. For example, we can find an energy source that can cure all of humanity and the earth’s damages. It is suspected that there is something deep within our earth but since we haven’t explored it we wouldn’t know. I believe that there are many species of animals that we don’t know exist and they may help us with technology, medicine, and many other things too. In the TED talk, the astonishing hidden world of the deep ocean, he explains that in the deep trenches there are animals that look like clams but are not clams at all but bacteria. He also discovered “Lost City” which are these lime stones who can withstand extreme temperatures (Ballard). With his discoveries, we can have a lot of information on the depths of the ocean. Furthermore, the ocean has more history than on earth because of the sunken Titanic which is a museum of history.

Robots are used for many factors including construction, mechanics, and tasks. There are only a few researches who want to know what is deep in the ocean. Engineers and scientists work together to make robots suitable for the ocean. They have cameras to see where to go, lights to see deep in the pitch darkness, and controls to move the robots. The researchers are using robots to help with the discovery of the ocean. In the article, they are creating robots where it would be too dangerous for any human investigation. They use extremely complicated formulas to calculate many factors that are with building a robot (Eustice). Reaching the deep ocean might just help researchers to answer some fundamental questions like; what is deep in our ocean, what lives in those extreme “environments”, and what is hidden in our ocean. As you might have heard of the lost city of Atlantis, what if it exists? Even though it is just a myth some people believe that it may exist because we haven’t discovered the ocean. Speaking of myths, the story of Sisyphus is a man who continues to go up a hill over and over again just like we continue to damage space over and over again (Camus). But maybe if we explore the ocean we can find a source of energy that can help us bring the earth back into shape. After all, the Titanic is in our ocean. Some say that this discovery and exploration might help with the scientists’ origin of our lives.

What if you explore hands-on? Many marine biologists scuba dive or use a submarine to see the depths of the ocean. What I appreciate about these people is that they are very passionate about the ocean and their job. They want to go somewhere where no one has gone. Because of this exploration, they have found metals, gold, and have helped the mining industry and the economy. These discoveries can not only help explorers but also miners and our economy with these findings. Although we can’t scuba dive down to the ocean’s depths we can go to a certain depth to see the mysteries of our ocean. In the video, the deep ocean is the final frontier on planet Earth, it explains how humans can’t dive into the depths of the ocean because of many factors (The Economist). The biggest factors that do not allow us to dive into the depths of the ocean are the thousands of meters deep, the temperature because hot vents are coming out of the seafloor that are hundreds of degrees Celsius but even with this technology these explorations are always challenging. In my opinion, the new technology that we can use for ocean exploration will be a huge help with more information and findings of the depths of the ocean floor.

What have we discovered then? Researchers, scientists, engineers, and marine biologists have done so much to try to discover as much of it as they can. For one, it takes a team of people to help build technology, analyze the discoveries and findings of it, etc. Given the fact that we have only discovered seven percent of the ocean when the earth is made up of seventy percent of water is alarming. Even though the ocean plays a role in everything from the air we breathe to daily weather and climate patterns, we know very little about our ocean. We only know surface level waters and a little bit of the deep sea because of technology like Google Maps, which take pictures of the earth from a satellite, and a few AUVs to see the deep ocean floors. We do not know much about our earth but that can change if we have more recognition on ocean exploration. And the deep ocean affects our survival but it is also poorly understood. One solution to know more about the earth is more funding on ocean research. We can always create a funding page for more oceanic research. Is there an energy source that can help us save the earth? There are robots and people that have helped his ocean’s discoveries. But still, there are so many questions. What is hidden in the depths of the ocean and what will we do to help?
