The National Organization for Women (NOW) is the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States and was founded in 1966 by an author named Betty Friedan. Friedan wrote NOWs official mission statement which is “to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all the privileges and responsibilities there of in truly equal partnership with men”. NOW has 500,000 contributing members and 550 chapters in all 50 states.

To this day NOW is constantly planning events and walks to improve women equality.

The first reason why NOW is such an important organization is because it focuses on the discrimination towards women in the work place. Women have been discriminated from many different jobs for years. Men believe that women aren’t as capable as they are therefore women are denied by many different industries and companies. Though women have come such a long way since the 1960s women are still not paid as much as men and are still dealing with discrimination. Take Wal-Mart for example. One of the largest lawsuits in U. S. history known as Wal-Mart V.

Dukes, filed by 1. 5 million women employees who were discriminated while working for this retail. A lady named Betty Dukes who felt that she was being discriminated due to her sex started this lawsuit. Unfortunately, Wal-Mart won the case because they are too big of a corporation to sue and there was no actual evidence of discrimination. This didn’t stop NOW though. NOW immediately called congress to pass a Paycheck Fairness Act, which would end wage discrimination between males and females. This bill passed, but didn’t get through the Senate.

NOW president Terry O’Neill states, “the gap between women’s and men’s pay is still sizable, which is why it’s so important to get this legislation passed (“Supreme Court to Women of Wal-Mart: You’re on Your Own”). ” I believe women deserve the right to be paid as much as men, especially at retails such as Wal-Mart. Gender should not determine the kind of salary you are making. If a male and female are doing an equal amount of work then they should be getting equal pay. Because this bill was not passed the women of NOW had to stand up and take action.

The National Organization for Women has adopted local Wal-Marts, raised awareness across the U. S. , and lastly works with unions, elected officials and community partners to make Wal-Mart a better employer. The second reason why NOW is such an important organization is because they focus on abortion rights and reproductive justice. Reproductive rights are a huge issue for women, so NOW supports safe and legal abortions and effective birth control. On January 22, 2013 NOW celebrated the 40h anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Roe v. Wade legalized abortion for women across the United States.

President O’Neill says “NOW affirms that women’s access to the full range of reproductive health services including safe, legal and affordable abortion care and birth control is integral to women’s ability to participate equally in our society. ” “Roe v. Wade has helped improve women’s status in the U. S. and saved countless women’s lives (“NOW to Honor 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade with Vigil at Supreme Court”). ” The right to abortion is important because sometimes women can be put into danger due to complications; some women aren’t prepared to have a baby, and incidents such as rape.

Abortion is a very controversial and touchy topic but women should be able to have the option to choose if they want an abortion. NOW has raised much awareness on abortion rights and reproductive rights. They are continuously saying “no” to dangerous abortion plans that can become an issue of life and death for women. Lastly the National Organization of Women is extremely unique and important when it comes to violence against women. Women of all ages are continuously treated violently whether it’s being sexually harassed or in some cases assaulted and even raped. Take for example sexual harassment on college campuses. According to the research report by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation, nearly two-thirds (62%) of the 2000 college students surveyed last May said they had been subjected to sexual harassment while at college. Most of the students experienced non-contact forms of harassment such as crude jokes, remarks and gestures, but nearly one-third said the harassment involved physical contact (“Sexual Harassment Remains Serious Problem on Campus”). ” Situations like being sexually harassed, assaulted, or raped effect many women significantly.

Experiencing events like this can cause female students to become disappointed in their college experience and in conclusion they stop paying attention to their studies. It’s crucial that women stand up for themselves and stop this type of behavior from occurring otherwise women are going to continue to get looked down upon. NOW has taken initiative in starting different campaigns that focus on sexual harassment towards women. In conclusion, women have made a tremendous amount of changes in many different subjects across the world.

NOW is extremely important to women because the women of this organization are continuously going out of their way to better women and help women across the U. S. NOW has come such a long way since it has started in the 1960s and has impacted our society greatly. This organization has formed a bond across our nation, where women feel comfortable standing up for what they believe in.
