Detailed answer:

Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medal-winning novel The Giver tells the story of Jonas, who lives in a society that has eliminated pain and strife by converting to “Sameness,” or a rigid conformity that eliminates emotional depth and all but one color: “Sameness.” In this world without diversity, Jonas is selected to become the Receiver of Memory—the person who will experience all of humanity’s past emotions and memories before they are lost forever. Through his training with the elderly and wise elder “Giver” who once served as Receiver himself, Jonas soon realizes that things are not as perfect as they appear to be in his community. When he begins to question the lack of diversity in the town, Jonas begins to feel deep emotions for the first time and discovers an underground rebellion against Sameness led by an old man named Asher. Soon Jonas realizes he must choose between following the rules that have been set for him or taking a stand for what he believes in no matter what the cost may be. The Giver novel has twenty-three chapters.
