Michigan State University (MSU) is a public research university located in East Lansing, Michigan. The university was founded in 1855 and served as a model for land-grant institutions created under the Morrill Act of 1862. The university was founded as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, one of the country’s first institutions of higher education to teach scientific agriculture. After the introduction of the Morrill Act, the college became coeducational and expanded its curriculum beyond agriculture. Today, MSU is one of the nation’s largest universities and has 543 undergraduate programs and more than 200 graduate programs.
In fact, Michigan State University is one of the largest universities in the United States. It has a student body of approximately 43,000 students and a faculty member count of more than 2,000.
The university’s campus is spread across more than 1,200 acres and includes more than 100 buildings with a combined floor space of over 20 million square feet (1.86 million m²). MSU houses more than 100 research centers and institutes which are spread across eight colleges and schools: Agriculture; Arts and Letters; Business; Education; Engineering; Human Medicine; Natural Science; Social Science. The university has several satellite campuses throughout Michigan including East Lansing, Davenport and Detroit.
