At the end of The Giver, Jonas and Gabriel reach a village where individuals care for each other—a somewhat technologically primitive village that nevertheless embodies the sharing paradigm. Eventually, he becomes a prominent leader in the community. Jonas goes on to marry Kira, and Gabriel lives in a boy’s lodge. Lowry’s sequel Gathering Blue hints at the ending, suggesting that Jonas did not die in the snow—however, Messenger features a supporting character named Leader who is hinted to be Jonas. Furthermore, Son, the novel that takes place from Gabriel’s point of view, explicitly mentions the ride on the sleigh that Jonas and Gabriel take. In short, Jonas and Gabriel did not die in the snow from hypothermia.
