What Happens to Madeline Usher In “The Fall of The House of Usher” By Edgar Allan Poe?

The Fall of the House of Usher is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1839. It tells the tale of Roderick Usher and his sister Madeline. The narrator, who is never named, says that Madeline is “a creature of delicate organization and fragile health”. He also describes her as being “excessively and anomalously pale”. She has been confined to her room by her brother, Roderick, for many years. Roderick knows that his sister is dying but he doesn’t tell anyone else about it because he wants to keep things from changing too much in their household. He doesn’t want to tell their mother or any other servants because he doesn’t want them to worry about Madeline’s health and he doesn’t want them bringing new people into their home while they’re trying to figure out what’s wrong with Madeline and how they can help her get better again so she can come back downstairs into the rest of the house with everyone else. Madeline dies soon after the story begins and is buried in the family crypt. Blaming himself for her death and believing that it was his fault because he didn’t take better care of her, Roderick goes mad. After that, the house collapses on itself and he dies while still inside it. The final scene shows the Gothic ruins of the house with no sign of Madeline’s body being found anywhere near it.
