Equity vs Equality is a discussion that we hear often in the United States. What does it mean to be equal, and how can we ensure that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to succeed?
The idea of equality is that everyone should be treated equally. However, this does not take into account the many factors that can impact an individual’s success. Equality only looks at surface characteristics such as gender or race while ignoring other factors like education or socioeconomic status. This can lead to unfair treatment of those who have less opportunities because they don’t have access to resources needed for success. Equity is about ensuring everyone has a fair and just opportunity to succeed.
It is important for organizations to create opportunities that are accessible for all employees, including those with disabilities and other unique circumstances that may prevent them from participating in typical work activities (such as working remotely). In order for people with different experiences to be able to succeed at work, organizations need to be flexible.
There’s no doubt that we need both equality and equity — we need equal access as well as equal opportunity. But we must also recognise that equality isn’t enough on its own. We also need to address the root causes of inequality if we’re going to achieve equity.
If we want a more equitable world for all of us, then we have to take action now. So we have to create inclusive environments where everyone can thrive, to challenge the systems and structures that perpetuate inequality. Everyone has a role to play in creating equity.
