Michelangelo Buonarroti is best known as an Italian artist who is famous for his paintings and sculptures. His best-known works include the statues of David and Pietà, and the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
Michelangelo was born in 1475 in Caprese, Tuscany. He began his apprenticeship at the age of 13 and by 1499 had completed his first major work—the statue of David. In 1504 he began work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, which took four years to complete. In 1512 he completed the statue of Pietà, which stands in Rome at Santa Maria della Vittoria Church.
In addition to these famous works of art, Michelangelo also designed several buildings including the Laurentian Library (1524) and St Peter’s Basilica dome (1546). He died in 1564 at the age of 89.
Michelangelo is considered one of the greatest artists of all time because he combined technical skill with artistic vision to create some truly stunning works of art!
