The University of Rochester is a private research university in Rochester, New York. The university is one of the leading private research universities in the United States and is ranked in the top 30 of national universities.
In fact, The University of Rochester was established in 1850 as Rochester Athenaeum, a private subscription library and museum for people interested in literature and science. In 1871, it became the first university to offer a graduate degree, which was awarded to Hiram Sibley, who later became one of the university’s professors. In 1931, it merged with the Strong Memorial Hospital School of Medicine to become the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. In 1968, it merged with the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1991, it became an independent institution known as the University of Rochester.
In addition to this, the university is known for its medical college, the Eastman School of Music, the Eastman Theatre, and its famous medical library.
The university has about 15,000 undergraduate students and 6,000 graduate students from more than 140 countries around the world. It has an alumni network that includes over 200,000 graduates from over 80 countries around the world. Notable alumni include Tom Cruise (actor), David Pogue (TV personality), Andy Warhol (artist), James Van Allen (astrophysicist) and others.
