Northeastern University is a research university located in Boston, Massachusetts. It is known for its cooperative education program, which integrates classroom study with professional experience. The university also has an extensive international presence, with campuses in Hong Kong and Shanghai as well as schools in Beijing and Shenyang.
The university was founded in 1898 by a group of Boston area businessmen and philanthropists who wanted to create a new type of public institution that would act as an alternative to private colleges. The university’s first president was John H. Finley, who served until 1905.
The school initially operated out of rented space at the Park Street Church on Beacon Hill in Boston. In 1918 it moved into its current building on Huntington Avenue overlooking Boston Common, which opened that same year. During this time the school was known as Northeastern High School and College; it became Northeastern University in 1932 when it received its charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (the school is now fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges).
Northeastern University offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its schools of Business, Computer Science, Education, Engineering and Science; Humanities; Law; Medicine; Nursing; Social Work; Public Health; Arts & Media Studies; and the School of Professional Studies. Northeastern also offers master’s degrees in Education and Public Health.
