Tufts University is a private research university located in Medford, Massachusetts, United States. The university is organized into ten schools, including two undergraduate programs and eight graduate divisions, on four campuses in Massachusetts and the French Alps. Tufts is one of the most selective universities in the United States with an acceptance rate of 8.2 percent for the class of 2023.
In fact, Tufts University was founded in 1852 by Christian Universalists who worked for years to open a nonsectarian institution of higher learning. The name “Tufts” originated from an 1810 gift from Peter Tufts, a benefactor who made a fortune as a merchant in China. He and his wife Hannah Tuft’s book collection became the basis for the library collection at Amherst College, which was named after their son Amherst. In 1854, the first building on our Medford campus was opened: the Edward G. Miner Chemistry Laboratory.
The university has over 2,400 faculty members and over 10,000 students spread out over four campuses. Tufts offers undergraduate degrees in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences; graduate degrees in medicine, science and engineering; master’s degrees in business administration; post-graduate certificates in biomedical sciences; and doctoral programs in the natural sciences and engineering. Tufts has graduated more than 100,000 alumni since its founding in 1852.
