The University of Pittsburgh is a public research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities and is categorized as an R1 institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
The university features 16 undergraduate programs in arts & sciences and seven graduate programs. It is organized into five constituent schools: Business; Education; Engineering; Health and Human Services; and Arts & Sciences.
In fact, The University of Pittsburgh was founded as Pittsburgh Academy in 1787 as a charity school to educate and prepare children for future employment. It was renamed Western University of Pennsylvania by a change to its charter in 1819 when it merged with the Academy of Pittsburgh, which had been established in 1787. It moved to its current location on Forbes Avenue in 1909, where it has since remained within the Oakland neighborhood of the city.
Pitt students have access to arts programs throughout their campus, including the Pittsburgh Playhouse Theater Company, a student-run theater company that produces three shows per academic year. The University’s Center for Arts Management & Production (CAMP) promotes student involvement in all aspects of arts administration and production at the university and provides professional development opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in arts management and production.
