The University of Southern California (USC) is a private research university in Los Angeles, California. USC is known for its highly selective admissions, academic excellence, and its prominent alumni and faculty.
The university was founded in 1880 as the Southern Branch of the University of California, which was operated briefly under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church before it became independent and moved to San Francisco in 1891. In 1919, the assets of the Southern Branch were transferred to a new university which was then named the University of California at Los Angeles; it was renamed once more to the University of California Los Angeles in 1952. The city control over the branch campus led to a rivalry with UCLA, which had been founded in 1919 by the rival State Normal School system.
In 1925, Herbert Hoover became the first U.S. President to deliver an on-campus commencement address; this tradition continued until June 2014, when President Barack Obama delivered his final graduation speech at USC as part of his farewell tour.
