The University of Rochester is a private research university in Rochester, New York. The university is highly ranked, especially for its programs in business, optics, and music.
In fact, The University of Rochester was founded in 1850 as a Baptist institution, but it has since become nonsectarian. In 1871, the University of Rochester moved to its present location on East River Road. The school had been located in downtown Rochester since 1835 when it was called the Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute.
The university offers degrees in more than 60 majors through its various schools and colleges: the School of Arts & Sciences; the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences; the School of Nursing; the Simon Business School; the Albert R. Mann Library (located on East River Road); and the Eastman School of Music.
Moreover, The University of Rochester has several satellite locations throughout Monroe County including Strong Memorial Hospital (which serves as an affiliate hospital) and Highland Hospital (which serves as a teaching hospital).
In addition to its own campus, the University of Rochester provides access to many other cultural sites including Strong National Museum of Play, Memorial Art Gallery, George Eastman Museum and Geva Theatre Center.
Today, the University of Rochester enrolls 6,800 undergraduate students and 2,400 graduate students from all 50 states and more than 70 countries.
